Cowley nestles between the Porcupine Hills and the village's namesake ridge.

Pioneers began settling this fertile area in the 1880’s, officially becoming Cowley in 1900. Today, Cowley is a small, friendly village of 225 people located in a picturesque setting between the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and the prairie land of Alberta Southwest.

In true western style, the people of Cowley have both accepted and embraced the natural elements that have shaped the land and its people. At the south of the Village is the famous Cowley Ridge Wind Power, the first of a growing Alberta industry. Visitors can check out the stunning view of the majestic wind turbines and wind farms against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains.

The people of Cowley are proud to continue the pioneering spirit of their forefathers in their dedication to the development of renewable energy sources. Cowley also has a long history of being the wave flying capital of Canada, and soaring activities have been taking place here since the early 1960s. In 1997, Cowley was named the first "National Soaring Site" by the Soaring Association of Canada.
